Presbyter Fr Nectarios Joannou
Fr Nectarios Joannou was born in Sydney on 11th October 1980 to parents Spyridon Joannou and Konstantina Georgiou.
He completed his secondary education at Blacktown Boys High School and furthered his education at Western Sydney University completing a Bachelor of Economics.
Putting into practice his passion for Byzantine Music, he was the Protopsaltes at the Greek Orthodox Church of Sts Raphael Nicholas and Irene Liverpool from 1997 to 2007 and Lambadarios at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church Belmore from January to June 2008. In addition, he was a dedicated member of the Australian Byzantine Choir.
In May 2000, on the Feast Day of Sts Raphael Nicholas and Irene, His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos (+2019) tonsured him a reader and on Sunday 13th July 2008, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation Redfern tonsured him a Sub-Deacon and ordained him to the Diaconate.
Throughout the duration of his diaconate, Fr Nectarios served with both His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos and His Grace Bishop Seraphim of Apollonia, while also working as Administrative Assistant in the offices of the Archdiocese and Greek Welfare Centre Community Services in Newtown and Harris Park. In addition, he completed his Bachelor of Theology education at St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College during this time.
With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos (+2019), His Grace Bishop Seraphim of Apollonia ordained him to Presbyter on Sunday 13th November 2011 at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Archangel Michael Crows Nest and was assigned as Parish Priest to the Greek Orthodox Church of St Demetrios, St Marys, serving this parish from 14th November 2011 until 30th November 2021.
On 10th October 2021, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia reassigned Fr Nectarios to the Greek Orthodox Church of St Stephanos, the reassignment taking effect from 1st December 2021.
Father Nectarios is married to Presvytera Sophia and has three children: Catherine, Maria and Konstantina.
